Analysis Summary
Ivanti has issued a warning, stating that there is active wild exploitation of three new security flaws affecting its Cloud Service Appliance (CSA).
The Utah-based software services firm said that the zero-day vulnerabilities are being used with another CSA vulnerability that the company patched last month. If these vulnerabilities are successfully exploited, an authorized attacker with administrator credentials may be able to execute arbitrary SQL commands, circumvent security measures, and get remote code execution.
The company stated, “We are aware of a limited number of customers running CSA 4.6 patch 518 and prior who have been exploited when CVE-2024-9379, CVE-2024-9380, or CVE-2024-9381 are chained with CVE-2024-8963.”
There's no proof that customer environments running CSA 5.0 have been exploited. The following is a succinct summary of the three vulnerabilities:
- CVE-2024-9379 (CVSS score: 6.5) - SQL injection in the admin web console of Ivanti CSA before version 5.0.2 allows a remote authenticated attacker with admin rights to run arbitrary SQL statements.
- CVE-2024-9380 (CVSS score: 7.2) - Before Ivanti CSA version 5.0.2, there was an operating system (OS) command injection vulnerability in the admin web portal that may grant remote code execution to an authenticated attacker with admin privileges.
- CVE-2024-9381 (CVSS score: 7.2) - Before version 5.0.2 of Ivanti CSA, path traversal gave an admin-level remote attacker access to circumvent security measures.
Ivanti has detected that the aforementioned vulnerabilities are being combined with CVE-2024-8963 (CVSS score: 9.4), a critical path traversal flaw that lets an unauthenticated remote attacker access functionality that is restricted. As part of its research into the exploitation of CVE-2024-8963 and CVE-2024-8190 (CVSS score: 7.2), another now-patched OS command injection vulnerability in CSA that has also been exploited in the wild, Ivanti says it found the three new vulnerabilities.
In addition to updating to the most recent version (5.0.2), the firm advises customers to check for warnings from the endpoint detection and response (EDR) tools installed on the device or to examine the appliance for any newly added or updated administrative users to look for indicators of compromise.
