Analysis Summary
Ivanti has disclosed that active exploitation of a recently patched security vulnerability in their Cloud Service Appliance (CSA) has occurred in the wild. CVE-2024-8190 (CVSS score: 7.2) is the high-severity vulnerability in question that, in certain situations, permits remote code execution.
Ivanti Cloud Services Appliance versions 4.6 Patch 518 and earlier have an OS command injection vulnerability that makes it possible for a remote, authorized attacker to execute code remotely. To take advantage of this vulnerability, the attacker has to have administrator-level access. Ivanti CSA 4.6, which is currently end-of-life due to a fault, means that clients will need to switch to a supported version going forward. Having stated that, CSA 4.6 Patch 519 addresses it.
This is the final patch that Ivanti will backport for this version due to its end-of-life status. For ongoing support, users must upgrade to Ivanti CSA 5.0. The only version that is supported and does not have this vulnerability is CSA 5.0. Clients who are currently using Ivanti CSA 5.0 don't need to do anything further. Ivanti modified its advisory on Friday, stating that it had seen verified exploits of the vulnerability in the wild, which were directed at a restricted group of clients.
It did not disclose any more information about the attacks or the identity of the threat actors using it as a weapon; yet, China-affiliated cyber espionage groups have leveraged several other vulnerabilities in Ivanti products as zero-day exploits. The development has compelled federal entities to implement the remedies by October 4, 2024, as per the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency's (CISA) addition of the vulnerability to its Known Exploited Vulnerabilities (KEV) database.

Remediation
- Refer to Ivanti Security Advisory for patch, upgrade, or suggested workaround information.
- Organizations must test their assets for the vulnerability mentioned above and apply the available security patch or mitigation steps as soon as possible.
- Implement multi-factor authentication to add an extra layer of security to login processes.
- Regularly monitor network activity for any unusual behavior, as this may indicate that a cyberattack is underway.
- Organizations must stay vigilant and follow best practices for cybersecurity to protect their systems and data from potential threats. This includes regularly updating software and implementing strong access controls and monitoring tools.
- Develop a comprehensive incident response plan to respond effectively in case of a security breach or data leakage.
- Maintain regular backups of critical data and systems to ensure data recovery in case of a security incident.
- Adhere to security best practices, including the principle of least privilege, and ensure that users and applications have only the necessary permissions.
- Establish a robust patch management process to ensure that security patches are evaluated, tested, and applied promptly.
- Conduct security audits and assessments to evaluate the overall security posture of your systems and networks.
- Implement network segmentation to contain and isolate potential threats to limit their impact on critical systems.
