Analysis Summary
Palo Alto Networks Expedition has a significant vulnerability that has now been patched. The U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) added the vulnerability to its list of Known Exploited Vulnerabilities (KEV) on Thursday, citing evidence of active exploitation.
The Expedition migration program has a vulnerability known as CVE-2024-5910 (CVSS score: 9.3) that involves a situation of missing authentication that could result in an admin account takeover. An attacker with network access can take over an Expedition admin account and perhaps steal configuration secrets, credentials, and other data due to a missing authentication vulnerability in Palo Alto Expedition.
All versions of Expedition before version 1.2.92, which was issued in July 2024 to fix the issue, are affected by the flaw. Although Palo Alto Networks has subsequently updated its initial advisory to admit that it is aware of CISA reports indicating there is evidence of ongoing exploitation, there are presently no reports on how the vulnerability is being leveraged in actual attacks.
A privilege escalation vulnerability in the Android Framework component (CVE-2024-43093) has also been added to the KEV catalog. Google revealed last week that the vulnerability was subject to limited, targeted exploitation. The other security vulnerability is CVE-2024-51567 (CVSS score: 10.0), a serious CyberPanel vulnerability that enables an unauthenticated remote attacker to run commands as root. Version 2.3.8 has fixed the problem.
According to cybersecurity researchers, it became apparent in late October 2023 that the vulnerability was being widely used by malevolent actors to install PSAUX ransomware on over 22,000 CyberPanel instances that were exposed to the internet. Three different ransomware gangs have swiftly taken advantage of the vulnerability with some data being encrypted more than once. It is advised that agencies under the Federal Civilian Executive Branch (FCEB) fix the vulnerabilities found by November 28, 2024, to protect their networks from ongoing attacks.

Remediation
- Refer to Palo Alto Security Advisory for patch, upgrade, or suggested workaround information.
- Organizations must test their assets for the vulnerability mentioned above and apply the available security patch or mitigation steps as soon as possible.
- Implement multi-factor authentication to add an extra layer of security to login processes.
- Regularly monitor network activity for any unusual behavior, as this may indicate that a cyberattack is underway.
- Organizations must stay vigilant and follow best practices for cybersecurity to protect their systems and data from potential threats. This includes regularly updating software and implementing strong access controls and monitoring tools.
- Develop a comprehensive incident response plan to respond effectively in case of a security breach or data leakage.
- Maintain regular backups of critical data and systems to ensure data recovery in case of a security incident.
- Adhere to security best practices, including the principle of least privilege, and ensure that users and applications have only the necessary permissions.
- Establish a robust patch management process to ensure that security patches are evaluated, tested, and applied promptly.
- Conduct security audits and assessments to evaluate the overall security posture of your systems and networks.
- Implement network segmentation to contain and isolate potential threats to limit their impact on critical systems.
