Analysis Summary
A newly disclosed vulnerability in the Linux kernel, CVE-2025-0927, impacts Ubuntu 22.04 users and poses a significant security risk. This heap overflow flaw exists in the HFS+ file system implementation, allowing attackers to escalate local privileges. Specifically, the vulnerability is a buffer overflow in the hfs_bnode_read_key function within fs/hfsplus/bnode.c, where improper boundary checks on B-tree node processing can lead to memory corruption.
The flaw has existed since Linux kernel version 2.6.12-rc2 (2005) and affects versions up to 6.12.0, including Ubuntu 22.04 with kernel 6.5.0-18-generic. Exploitation requires an attacker to mount a specially crafted file system. While historically restricted to processes with CAP_SYS_ADMIN, the introduction of namespaces and default Ubuntu polkit rules enable users with active local sessions to create loop devices and mount block file systems, potentially bypassing security restrictions.
A cybersecurity researcher has released a proof-of-concept exploit, demonstrating how an attacker can repeatedly mount corrupted images to trigger the vulnerability. Successful exploitation could result in arbitrary code execution or a denial-of-service (DoS) attack, potentially crashing affected systems.
The Common Vulnerability Scoring System (CVSS) assigns CVE-2025-0927 a severity score of 7.8, highlighting its serious implications. Given that Ubuntu Desktop and Server distributions allow unprivileged mounts in certain conditions, the risk of exploitation is increased.
In response, Ubuntu has issued a security advisory and a patch to mitigate the risk. Users are strongly advised to apply the necessary updates immediately to prevent potential system compromise.
