Analysis Summary
Google has released security fixes for a high-severity vulnerability in its Chrome browser, tracked as CVE-2024-7971. This flaw identified as a type confusion bug, affects the V8 JavaScript and WebAssembly engine.
The vulnerability which could allow a remote attacker to exploit heap corruption via a specially crafted HTML page, is present in Chrome versions before 128.0.6613.84. It has been actively exploited in the wild, making it a critical issue for users to address promptly. The flaw was discovered and reported by the Microsoft Threat Intelligence Center (MSTIC) and Microsoft Security Response Center (MSRC) on August 19, 2024.

According to the report, this vulnerability is not an isolated incident but part of a broader pattern. CVE-2024-7971 is the third type of confusion bug in V8 that Google has patched this year, following CVE-2024-4947 and CVE-2024-5274. Furthermore, it is one of nine zero-day vulnerabilities in Chrome that have been addressed in 2024, three of which were demonstrated at the Pwn2Own 2024 event. This highlights an ongoing challenge in securing the browser against sophisticated attacks.
To mitigate the risk, Google recommends that users upgrade to Chrome version 128.0.6613.84/.85 on Windows and macOS, and version 128.0.6613.84 on Linux. Users of Chromium-based browsers like Microsoft Edge, Brave, Opera, and Vivaldi should also apply the updates as they become available to protect against potential exploitation of this vulnerability.
