Analysis Summary
One of Dubai's oldest hospitals, International Modern Hospital (IMH), has allegedly been compromised by the notorious ransomware gang Medusa.
IMH is one of Dubai's oldest private hospitals, having opened its doors in 2005. A total of 117 beds, five fully functional operating rooms, intensive care units, cancer and dialysis wards, as well as physiotherapy and rehabilitation services, are all part of this tertiary multispecialty hospital's contemporary amenities.
Targeting mostly Windows environments, Medusa first appeared as a ransomware-as-a-service (RaaS) platform in late 2022 and rose to prominence in early 2023. It's important to distinguish Medusa from the RaaS with the same name, MedusaLocker, which has been around since 2019. Mostly, the Medusa ransomware gang spreads its malware by taking advantage of services that are known to be susceptible (publicly accessible assets and programs with known flaws), and by breaking into legitimate accounts by using initial access brokers as a means of penetration.
According to the samples the ransomware group provided, the IMH breach is claimed to have resulted in the exfiltration of 1.45 TB of data, which contains sensitive information such as personnel data, Emirates IDs, backups, scanned documents, and more. The Medusa ransomware gang has demanded $700,000 in ransom, and the deadline is May 29, 2024.
